Christmas Wheat Berries (Puffin Cereal)

This is one of the twelve meatless Ukranian Christmas dishes typically served on Christmas Eve. Our family enjoys it on Christmas morning along with other foods for our brunch. When the kids were little they nick-named the cereal “Puffin Cereal”.

  • 1½ c wheat
  • 3 c water
  • 2 T poppy seeds
  • ¼ t salt
  • 2 T honey

In a slow cooker, soak the wheat in water in the morning the day before you want to serve it. In the evening add poppy seed, honey and salt. Cover and cook the wheat overnight on low.

In the morning, drain off excess water, if any. Serve hot in dessert bowls with whipping cream and a drizzle of honey.
